This page will teach you how to design your own personalized X graphical desktop sessions by editing shell scripts.

Virtual Terminal (TTY) and X Session - Linux

These session managers allow you to specify which additional programs will be loaded at the beginning of your session by providing a graphical interface. Furthermore, being able to create X session scripts allows you to run a graphical desktop even if the graphical login manager, GDM, is broken or not installed. In the case of the example shown above, the bash Bourne Again Shell has been specified as the shell.

The second line specifies the application that drives the X session. This is sometimes called the "magic process", as the X session will end when this application stops running.

The "magic process" in the case of the above example is "gnome-session", which will launch the GNOME desktop environment.

How to create a X session script You do not have to have root privileges to create your own X session script. Open a terminal by opening the Applications menu, select Accessoriesand then click Terminal. Any changes you make will be saved to the file. Note: In Linux, all files that begin with a period are treated by the system as hidden files.

Specify the shell on the first line:! Not having commands run in the background will lead to your X session script getting stuck on the first command listed in the file, so that all you see is an empty desktop. Also, any line that begins with a will be treated by the shell as a comment and ignored.

Use this to your advantage by placing notes in your script or disabling commands that you do not currently wish to run. When you are satisfied, save your file and close the text editor. Now make your X session script executable.

While you can also use xinit to run GUI applications without a window manager, many graphical applications expect an EWMH compliant window manager. Display managers start Xorg for you and generally source xprofile. Install the xorg-xinit package. If it is present in a user's home directory, startx and xinit execute it. This default xinitrc will start a basic environment with Twmxorg-xclock and Xterm assuming that the necessary packages are installed.

Therefore, to start a different window manager or desktop environment, first create a copy of the default xinitrc in your home directory:.

Then edit the file and replace the default programs with desired commands. Remember that lines following a command using exec would be ignored. For example, to start xscreensaver in the background and then start openboxuse the following:.

Otherwise, the script would halt and wait for each program to exit before executing the window manager or desktop environment. Note that some programs should instead not be forked, to avoid race bugs, as is the case of xrdb.

Prepending exec will replace the script process with the window manager process, so that X does not exit even if this process forks to the background. The xserverrc file is a shell script responsible for starting up the X server.

In order to maintain an authenticated session with logind and to prevent bypassing the screen locker by switching terminals, Xorg has to be started on the same virtual terminal where the login occurred [1]. See Xserver 1 for a list of all command line options.

Alternatively the binary can be called directly from the command prompt as described in Override xinitrc. With this method you need to set each application's window geometry through its own configuration files if possible at all.
